Each December the village of Tortugas near Las Cruces in New Mexico celebrates the Virgin of Guadalupe Feast Day with colorful dances and celebrations and a pilgrimage to the top of nearby "A" Mountain. The leaves of the sotol plant, also called desert spoon, are used by many pilgrims to make a quiote, or commerative staff.
